INSTALLING RETROFIT & REPLACEMENT VINYL WINDOWS.

In prior articles i explained to you the way to establish if your windows are applicants for vinyl replacement style frames or retrofit style frames.

That is the flush fin that goes against the outside surface, customarily stucco. Prepare the window by drilling three / 8" holes in the areas of the frame where you need to screw it in effect. Typically , there'll be three holes on each side and three more across the top. Don't drill any holes in the bottom track. Here is a superb link about window treatments. To adjust for out of square conditions, shim the bottom right or left corner by placing a shimming material between the sill and bottom of the window frame. Once square, drive a 3" deck screw thru the three / 8" holes and into the wood studs. Look for drainage holes in the track and insert a thin screwdriver and pick up. Now, you wish to go back outside and caulk the opening where the retrofit fin meets the exterior surface of the house. Don't forget, you already applied a generous bead of caulk before inserting the new frame into the opening. The remainder of the job is done on the inside. This week we're going to chat about the method of essentially removing your aluminum windows in preparation for installing vinyl replacement windows. Let's begin with a horizontal sliding window, which is not unusual countrywide.

There's going to be a sliding panel and a still panel. All you do is slide the panel open, grab the sides of the panel with your hands, lift up and swing out. Plenty of sliding windows have rollers on the top and the bottom. The top rollers don't really do anything, they are there more as spares to replace the bottom rollers when they wear out. But a lot of times the window installer will adjust these top rollers to stop any one from lifting out the panel. If this is the case with your windows, there'll be a screw at the apex of each side rail. Another obstacle involves a tiny piece of rubber the manufacturer places in the top track. Reach in there with a long, thin screwdriver, and try and pry it out. This covers all the insulation and the old metal frame. You and your helper have to carry the frame in place whilst you put a screw in the top center to support the frame. Once more, you apply a bead of caulk to the old frame, then measure and cut the top and bottom trim pieces. You can install vinyl windows with no need to damage the surrounding structure.
